White House Announces Government Employee Job Cuts as Funding Gap Nears Three-Week Mark

Administration officials disclosed the start of federal worker layoffs on the end of the week, following through on earlier warnings linked to the continuing US government shutdown, which is now poised to stretch into its third straight week.

Official Announcement and Initial Details

The director of the White House budget office wrote on social media that “RIFs have begun,” referring to the official procedure for terminating staff.

Although Vought did not specify which departments were affected, a treasury spokesperson confirmed that layoff warnings had been distributed within that department. Furthermore, a Department of Homeland Security representative noted that staff reductions would take place at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Also, a union representing federal workers announced that members at the Education Department would be affected by the staff cuts.

Labor Reaction and Court Actions

Union leaders cautions that the terminations would have “devastating effects” on services used by millions of Americans and pledged to challenge the actions in court.

This is shameful that the administration has used the funding lapse as an pretext to wrongfully terminate thousands of workers who deliver essential functions to the public across the country,” said a national union president, representing the AFGE.

The AFL-CIO reacted to the announcement, saying, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Legislative Impasse and Funding Battle

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have declined to vote for a GOP-supported bill to restore funding unless it contains healthcare-centered concessions. After repeated failed attempts, the Senate’s Republican leaders have adjourned the Senate until next Tuesday, indicating the standoff is unlikely to be resolved before then.

At a media briefing, the Republican House speaker, Mike Johnson, blasted opposition lawmakers for rejecting the GOP proposal, which passed in the lower chamber on a largely partisan basis.

Federal workers’ final pay that 700,000 federal workers will see until Washington Democrats decide to fulfill their duties and reopen the government,” Johnson stated. Beginning shortly, American service members, who often live on tight budgets, are going to miss a full paycheck.”

Judicial and Practical Limits

Last week, labor groups filed for a court injunction to block the administration from implementing any reductions in force during the shutdown. Moreover, a federal judge directed the government to provide specifics on layoff plans, affected agencies, and if any government staff had been brought back to execute staff reductions.

A report argued that a government shutdown restricts the authority of the government to conduct terminations, referencing official advice that admitted any permanent layoffs need to have been initiated before the funding expired.

Consequences for Employees

These terminations took place on the same day that federal workers got only a incomplete payment covering the end of September but not the start of October, since appropriations lapsed at the beginning of the period.

Max Stier, the head of the advocacy group, criticized the gridlock’s impact on government workers.

This is unjust to make federal employees bear the burden because our elected officials in Congress and the administration have failed to keep our government running,” the advocate stated. The flight regulators, VA nurses, wildland firefighters and safety officials are not responsible for this funding crisis.”

The irony is that members of Congress and senior White House leaders are still receiving salaries amid the funding gap.
