Watkins Maintains the Edge - But Calvert-Lewin May Yet Make the World Cup

Only one goal in his initial ten English top division appearances this season had many wondering whether Dominic Calvert-Lewin's prime were over.

But, a mere four weeks on, he has become the most talked-about forward in England after scoring 7 goals in six back-to-back games.

His latest goal, in a tie versus Sunderland, took his season's haul to eight, seeing him become the top English scorer in the Premier League this term.

An Impressive Return to Form

The 28-year-old signed for Leeds United on a Bosman move in the summer, following a nine-year period with Everton that was marred by injuries in its latter stages.

However, the data behind his revival in Daniel Farke's new counter-attacking 3-5-2 system are extremely remarkable.

His six-match scoring sequence places him in exclusive company as only the 11th English player to score in six or more successive Premier League matches.

To frame that statistic, even England captain Harry Kane was unable to produce a run lasting this many games - his best remains two separate five-match runs.

And the only English striker to outdo Calvert-Lewin in the modern era is Jamie Vardy, who embarked on an eight-game scoring spree for Leicester City in 2019.

The Reason for the Hot Streak?

What is behind Calvert-Lewin so difficult to stop in the past month? A previous opponent's manager summed it up perfectly.

"He has the ideal timing," the manager said. "He's clever and a excellent striker and he found the timing to arrive exactly when needed."

That natural ability and timing inside the box was what made him a popular figure at his previous club.

Experts highlight the system adjustment to a 3-5-2 as a significant factor, helping more players to enter the box and occupy defenders, which has created the striker a little more space.

"He is a classic centre-forward," noted a former professional. "For the goal... it was a lovely little finish beyond the keeper, a typical centre-forward's goal."

"I've been through a lot since then. Lots of ups and lots of lows. A test of character and I've persevered and kept going... I've believed in myself and this is the result."

His manager has shown complete confidence at this hot streak, reiterating that the player is "among the elite strikers" in the competition.

International Question

Calvert-Lewin's return to form has inevitably fueled conversations of an England recall.

The ex- Sheffield United player has 11 England caps, netting four goals, but has not featured for the national team since the previous European Championship.

Pundits think the striker will be in contention for the World Cup squad if he can maintain this form.

"He looks as in shape as he has in a considerable period," one said. "If he continues this level of form... then he's going to be in a debate for a World Cup place."

Intense Competition

However, the battle for places as backup to Harry Kane is incredibly tough.

Ollie Watkins of Aston Villa, coming off a decisive double versus Chelsea, is presently seen as ahead in the selection race, according to some analysis.

"If you contrast the two players, Watkins has the edge in terms of using his speed to test teams," it was said.
