UEFA has opened formal action against Chelsea winger the Portuguese international following an incident where he pushed over a ball boy during the Champions League match against PSG.

The 26-year-old, Pedro Neto, knocked the boy during added time of the knockout stage first leg at Parc des Princes – a match in which his team suffered a 5-2 – which caused the boy to fall off his seat.

This provoked a confrontation between players from both teams.

Uefa said proceedings have been instigated against Neto on grounds of "conduct contrary to sporting spirit" in accordance with UEFA's code.

"Disciplinary officials will make a ruling regarding this matter in due course," European football's governing body added in its statement.

The Chelsea player apologised for the incident attributing it to getting swept up "in the intensity of the match" as he tried to quickly retrieve the ball.

"This is out of character for me. Emotions were running high and I sincerely apologise. I gave him my shirt. I deeply regret it - I owe him an apology," Neto told the media.

"My French is not very good, so teammate Vitinha came over and told him that it was a momentary lapse.

"Eventually he accepted the apology and I presented him with my jersey apologising many times. He could see the context of the incident and was happy with the outcome."

Chelsea face PSG in the upcoming second leg in the second leg, after a match against Newcastle at their home ground this weekend in the Premier League.
